3D Printing Thread

So I bit the bullet and finally got a 3D printer. Been curious about it for a long time, and it finally got somewhat cheap, so here I am.

DUDE. This is like everything I'd ever trained in/for all wrapped up in one. engineering, electronics, mechatronics, programming, design, cad, 🤯🤯

so now I'm in crash-course learning mode, figuring out how the printer works, how the materials behave/print, what all the things mean, how all the software works, printing basic sh*t, test files, random junk, on and on... A lot is like "hey I remember this kinda..."

Anyone else get bit by this bug? So far my "cheap" experiment has doubled in price bc you need different filaments and tools and....

I don’t have much interest for this for personal use because I’ve been making SLA’s at work for the last 20 years. Everyone seems to think that 3-D printing is something new but stereolithography has been around for prototyping a long time. It’s a great engineering tool for testing fit and function but is severely lacking for High quality finishes and mass production.

I am in the process of planning for adding one with as large a bed and printing height as possible I've been back and forth with my brother (who has two) between filament and resin types. For my needs filament is winning out. I am looking at this brand: https://www.prusa3d.com/

I (the company I work for) bought one here at work about 4 or 5 years ago. Well you know how files can get mixed up and sometimes I get confused (old age) but I'll be darned if that crazy printer doesn't spit our a car part or two?? They can be really useful for sure.

Additive manufacturing (inner mfg. snob that I am) pays for my car hobby. I have been doing high detail 1/64 agricultural equipment design and model building for sale for about 10 years.

I farm my printing out to a contract company because the Stratysis Objet UV cure resin printer this are done on are deep 5 figures.

But I do my own design, part cleanup, paint and assembly.

I used to do some scratch building with styrene plastic or die cast 'toy' bases along with resin casting but I do most of my stuff through 3D printing these days.

I think you can buy the entire power seat transmission housing from G body parts. I saw it recently, not sure where though.

I've been printing for about a year now. It's a fun hobby but the learning curve can be steep. Im starting to tinker with ABS plastic as my filament. I have a few custom ideas for my build that the printer will create.

Keep learning and push yourself. My next challenge is to do a two color print.
I run a monoprice printer which is a prusa knock off. Solid printer that started as a mid 200 dollar printer but I've modified and upgraded to be a solid printer.
