It's been my understanding that the key is don't Rev the R4 past 4500 RPM. I haven't personally experienced bad service out of an OE R4.

It really wasn't that bad. Pull the plug wires off the coils, pull the coils as an assembly and then 4 bolts and the cover is off. Cleaning them up was the biggest chore. Dad didn't realize they should be bare aluminum. He thought they were painted black, if that tells you anything.
