Thanks for the responses. I did think about the roller cam, but the 86 block is not ready for a roller cam. Comp cams has the retro rollers you can retrofit but they are about $1k for the setup. It was about $500 cheaper for the kit for the flap tappet, but I'll be honest I keep going back...
Hello all, I'm wondering if I can get some opinions here. I have an 86 MC SS that I'm having some work done too. I'm having an Edelbrock pro flo efi 3 kit put on it, new camshaft installed: XE250H (specs here: http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=83&sb=2) Edelbrock...
Hello all, I just had a question as to whether this is common or not. When I leave my lights on or my key in the ignition the warning buzzer/dinger thing is VERY quiet and almost inaudible. Is this normal or something that happens frequently with these cars? The buzzer in my 80 Firebird is...
I've never restored a car without an engine, but I've restored ones with far more body work than that and interior work too. It can certainly be saved and it's a neat car with that sunroof.
Just an update, I was told by the person at QFT that my stock distributor will not work. Basically with this car and how it's setup, I'm screwed either way. I need to get an MSD distributor for the computer to be able to control it, or get a mechanical/vacuum advance one. Wish they would have...
Awesome, thanks for your response. After doing some more digging and research, it looks like 1980 and later distributors are vacuum advance lock out and controlled by the computer. I can't say I've been overly impressed with the tech support there at QFI, but it seems the swap I was reading...
I'll have to take a pic of the rotor when I can, but from what I've read the 87 I have is a computer/electronically controlled HEI so I don't know. When I get a chance I'll take a pic and maybe we can determine what it is.
Where is the vacuum canister ball located? I also have an 80 Firebird I'm working on so this is interesting as that car will also most likely need work done it also. Luckily there's a place online that sells refurbished controls.
Well, good news, I tried it again today, and it did work so that air was coming out of the middle vents. Not sure what is behind the dash, but I'd prefer to not have to take it apart to find out and that it will keep working. Hopefully it's just that it's been sitting for a while and dusting...
I saw this when I was searching for info before I bought my car. I'm happy with it though, these are really nice cars. Mine was a low mileage unmolested original. I can see why these were so popular. I've had many people tell me they had one and used to see them all over in the 80's.
It seems like it has something to do with the timing being controlled by the computer as this is not for any type of racer. I just want the reliability and drivability of fuel injection.
Hello, I was wondering if you are running the vent in these cars, will there be air blowing from the middle vents also? On my car when I turn it on it only comes out the bottom floor vents. The first time I turned it on it took a few seconds and then made a noise before it started blowing from...
Hello all, I've found out that the fuel injection kit I want to use needs a locked out distributor. I don't exactly know what this means or how they work. I was suggested to get one from MSD, and I see you can get one that has a lockout feature, but they cost $400. I also saw in a search that...
