I'm running an S-10 manual steering box on my El Camino. I've got 15x8 inch wheels all the way around the car. The rear will wear some 255/60r15's. Now, what's a good size to run on the front of the car given those variables? I'm also running the high rate S-10 coil springs, if that makes any difference.
I'm mainly concerned with how much effort I'm gonna have to use with the manual steering setup. Of course, I'd like to run the same size all the way around, but the 255/60's on the front might be to much. I was kind of leaning towards maybe a 205/70 or 215/70. I think these would look good with the rears and won't require a lot of steering effort. Possibly a 205/75 or 215/75, if they can be mounted on an 8-inch wheel.
Back when I had 15 x 8 ARE rims with 4" of backspace on my Monte I ran 275/60 on the back and a 245/60 on the front with no rubbing anywhere.
I can no longer fit a wide rim up front because of my headers so I now run a frontrunner and a 15 x 9.5 rear with the frame notch.
I wouldn't worry about tire size up front. Run what you want. Have you ever run a manual steerin box before?? I run one on my 80 and I love it. It takes more turns of the wheel to make as sharp of a turn as a car with ps but it's almost easier turning in my opinion. Even not rolling mine turns like a dream.
235/60/15s or 215/65/15s or 215/70/15 up front with the 255/60/15s in the back. I've always run the 235s on 7" rims up front with my 15x8s in the rear. 235/60/15s are getting hard to find. The 70s would be almost as tall as the 255/60. The 205/70 is getting very small and narrow for the rim.
Thanks for the input everyone. Sorry to respond so late. I do have a manual steering box on my daily driver. I love it, but I'm also running some skinnys on the front. As far as the El Camino goes, I'm gonna have to hold off a little on my tire purchase. I had two setbacks while putting this car together.
I had one of my custom bent transmission cooling lines short out against my starter lug. That sucked and also made a mess of my shop floor. A little header wrap and some hose, it won't happen again.
I'm also building some seat brackets for my buckets. It's turned into a chore and is requiring more time than I estimated.
