This is the main special tool you will need. The other two you can make.

Tool number is J-25012.

Very difficult to find, but once and a while will be on eBay.

If this is first one you are doing, I suggest the DVD as shown.

Bushing set, these are the ones you will need if kit doesn't include the bushings.

Source: Oregon Performance Transmissions. Of course other sources out there.

Looks like a good score.

Do not take it to just anybody, the valve body is worth more than the whole transmission. Some shady crook will keep the valve body and replace it with a CA valve body and make some nice coin. Also the governor is a unicorn not as good as an Olds OZ model but almost as good and they are not available anywhere.

The other special tool that is 200 specific is the tool to put the bushing in for the tailshaft/yoke since the housing is non removeable. Look for a Transgo T-0160-A.

Also need a bushing driver kit.

I had a late model CZF unit that I sold cheap years ago. It was stored at my parents house up in NY and the house was being liquidated. Of course I'm kicking myself in the *ss years later. I have a low performance (CTF) unit that I hope to upgrade. This was out of a low mileage warrantied '88 Caprice. Probably one of the last of the breed.
Of course it will need a valve body upgrade, modified governor, and performance servo.

Here's a picture of my ongoing project and transmission fixture I made.

I bought a bushing driver set off of Ebay. Many useful sizes of drivers.

Where in Florida are you Jimmy?

I see where you are. located. Almost smack dab in the middle of the state. Also, do yourself a favor and pickup a Techtran ATSG 200-4R manual to familiarize yourself with this trans.

I rebuilt my 2004r last year without a single special tool. All I did was grind a notch in a screwdriver and use normal hand tools and a yoke to hold and center the output shaft.

I went through Dave Husek out of NYC for my parts (Turbo buick performance). Pricey but everything is in stock and he is great at picking up the phone (sometimes it's hard to get off the phone lol). CKperformance is another commonly thrown around supplier but they are poor at shipping orders out complete and communicating what is in stock, unfortunate as they have great prices and a clear website. You can go with a normal kit from a typical supplier but piecing together the line boost valves for the pump, the seals, the bushings, clutches, selectable thrust washers, etc, is really hard if you are doing just a single trans. Husek knows what you need which helps a lot.

Husek is a firm believer in tweaking the stock valve bodies instead of doing a trans-go. I shipped him valve body and he drilled holes in the separator plate and inspected the valves and remanned. If you tell him what you are doing he will build a setup tailored to your setup.

I just put 500 miles on my fresh trans last week on a 3 day drag and drive with a 12 second full weight Cutlass and it performed flawlessly. It's my first auto trans rebuild. It blends street and track manners great.


And yeah, the $200 core is worth it. I spent $500 to buy a BRF valve body and governor from Husek as I started with a non performance core. Don't mean this to be an advertisement (I paid him probably 3x what I initially budgeted) but it did turn out great.
