i made a crude distributor tester out of stuff i already had.. powered by a variable speed motor spark plugs grounded to the metal frame ..using a digital advance timing light with tach built in put in new springs i got 25 deg mechanical advance at 2400 rpms the vacuum can gives me another 20 deg at 11 inchs of vacuum.. i idle at 18 inches of vacuum .should i try a vac can that fully deploys at 15 inchs of vacuum ?

Wow, nice job setting up your distributor advance machine. From what you describe a setting at 45° advance "total" should eventually produce a hole in one of your pistons. I'm not sure any engine can withstand that much advance without detonation. I'm sure there are many other opinions out there on this website, but that's mine.

thanks jim i had fun making it i;m getting a vacuum advance limiter to bring that back to 10 deg vacuum advance.. i thought advance total meant initial and mechanical advance ..vacuum was on top of that at high vacuum
