Smog pump…failing?

Hi, all!
Daniel, ‘84 Caprice, 305:
Although I know the smog pump, pumps air, I if it’s failing, could it cause a rough idle? Also, if the bearings in it are bad, could it produce smoke from the friction?

Although I’m not driving the car except to move it for the street cleaning day, I’m starting the engine once a day to give the battery a little boost. For the first time this morning, I heard a quiet whine that lasted for about 15-seconds, a sound I’ve not heard before, seems like it came from the passenger side of the engine.

When I last drove it for street cleaning, a few days ago, after turning off the engine, I opened the hood and saw smoke coming from the front left (passenger side). I know I need to replace the seeping valve cover gasket on that side, but it sure did look like the smoke might have been coming from the smog pump.
If the smog pump is bad, would it affect the smell of the exhaust?

About the smog pump:
When I got the car about five years ago, it was missing the smog pump. I had the previous owner put it in before I bought the car, but I have no idea if it was a new one or a junk yard find.

I can't help in any way but am tagging along to learn something.

A lot of the time, the bearings get clogged up with dirt in the grease of the bearings over time, making the innards turn with hard mud in the rollers. Not a good look. If it's squealing or screaming, it could be the paddles hitting up on the sides of the barrel and that's not a good sound either. If there's smoke coming off the pump or belt, take the belt off. Sorry, but if it is the pump starting to lock up, it's not going to get better. If it's a separate V-belt, and things improve significantly after taking the belt off, then it's likely a bad pump.

If the belt is a serpentine, only run it with the belt off for like 30 seconds since you don't want to run it too long without the water pump. It sounds like if it was driving around before without a pump, then it's a separate V-belt system, but I don't know.

Problem is, good pumps, even rebuilt ones, are hard to find. And when you do, they're a bit pricey.

7834916 is the GM part number callout for the smog pump. 32-406 from Cardone.

Here's one that claims it'll fit your car. I don't know.

Pull the belt and turn the pump by hand, it should turn smooth with a little resistance. If it feels like it is full of sand then you need to look into the bearings.

Also keep in mind there are check valves that only allow the air to go into the exhaust. If these are bad the exhaust gas can enter the AIR system and melt/burn things.

My neighbor had a 1980 Monte Carlo. The smog pump locked up and broke the fan belt. I opened it up and found vanes that slide in and out to pump the air. I WD40'd the crap out of it, mounted it in a bench vice, and turned the shaft by hand. It slowly loosened up and after more oil, it felt OK. It never acted up again.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I think the first thing I’ll do is to replace the valve cover gasket (left side), that out to resolve some of the burning issues. I’ll also loosen the belt on the air pump, see if it turns fairly easily. As I know no sound a car makes is a singular thing, I’ll listen for the quiet whine next time I start it, maybe narrowing down where it’s coming from.

No need to start the engine once a day. Not even once a week. Pumping the gas every day and filling the crankcase with raw gas dilutes the oil, and starting is the hardest part on the parts until they are oiled. My car sits for months without starting it.

I think I’m better off getting a jump-start battery unit. I’m hoping I can resolve the smoking problem and rough idle…and pass California smog to regularly drive it again soon!

They used to be super expensive when they were available from GM. I see only rebuilt or Fleabay available. I would guess junkyard. Of course you could just remove the fan belt and see if the sound goes away.

That could be power steering, alternator, any belt. Are you in a cold climate? It is winter and that does stuff.
