Yes it's definitely some kind of lsd. I was surprised by the rust also as I have been driving the car regularly for the last year. Fluid was black and needed the change. I'm just wondering what kind of locker it is as I'm not familiar with the different types. I know it aint the g80 gov lock.

Looks to be an Auburn cone clutch style. Had this style in my 86 El Camino. If you look on the ring gear end of the case you should find the Auburn logo cast into the webbing between the ring gear bolts.

Looks to me like a typical GM Eaton clutch type. Would have been OE if ordered with G80.

Not a locker
this is not correct, it is a limited slip/posi whatever you want to call it. You can see the springs inside the case and the reatiners that hold them in place. These spring under tension press against clutch plates that lock th espiders gears and presvent thme from slipping, thus two wheel spin!

It is a locker/posi/limited slip or whatever name you want to call it. In some pics you can see a spring inside the case. There are four springs that are held in place by 2 flat metal retainers. They apply tension to the clutch disks and lock the spider gears thus two wheel burn-out!

I was very curious as to how you can spot the difference between an Auburn and an Eaton without removing it from the diff. I know Auburn is a "cone type" but I see no cones and yet 2 people think it is one so I had to research. Apparently the Eatons have cutouts for the tabs on the clutch packs, and this old thread has 2 helpful pictures. https://gbodyforum.com/threads/what-posi-is-this.67652/

And I'll go out on a limb and assume Ribbedroof was simply stating that there's a difference between a limited slip/ posi and a locker.

Missing how your post applies to my
quoted post. I thought my point was clear, it’s a clutch type Eaton which is not considered a locker
