I replaced the cheapo electric pump that made a terible thumping noise for a Carter rotary vane one. The Carter is tall and it doesn't fit tucked into the frame like the old one. It doesn't look safe so I'll be extra careful with curbs! It is very quiet with humming sound when standing next to it. In the inerior there is no sound at all. There is no place to put it that sits lower than the tank, unless I make a brackets with hangers and those look so cheap from those I've seen. So I'll live with it.

In tank is pretty easy. Just use a sending unit from a V6 TBI car. That's what I'm using with a Racetronix 255lph pump for a TPI Camaro. If you're still running a carb, you could probably get away with using a stock pump for a TBI motor. They run pretty low pressure. I'd never trust an external electric pump for anything street driven

Man, if you're worried about a <$100 difference for a part that will leave you stranded on the side of the road, I think you're in the wrong hobby.
Unless I drive over a curb it won't hit the road as it sits higher than the mufflers, LCA attaching point . I've been in the hobby longer than you have been alive son!

I'm just saying, there's a reason all OEMs put the fuel pump in the tank and have been since EFI came out, with the exception of DI motors. I think they may even have a second in the tank. Not sure about that one.

Even the old carbed ZZ3 emissions legal 350 crate engine they used to sell for 3rd generation F bodies came with an in tank electric fuel pump and a regulator to knock down the pressure to 7 psi.

I think one of the main issues with external fuel pumps is not running a quality pump that is rated for continuous use.
On my Monte I have been running external pumps for 30+ years and never had an issue, I started off with a Mallory 140 and later switched to a Paxton 300 as the cubic inches increased and then later installed the Mallory to be the independent pump for the nitrous system. The Paxton has a 10 AN line going to the 4 port regulator and splits to a pair of 8 AN lines to feed a 1250 Dominator carb.
Both pumps get power from a fuse panel and relays mounted in the trunk.
