…followed by 3 coats of base coat (2 for coverage and 1 drop coat for the metallics), then 2 coats of clear.

It turned out pretty good, one small run after the second coat of clear, but otherwise fine. Being the backside I’m not too concerned about the run, but if it bothers me enough I can always wet sand it out. One of the benefits of clear coat.

The reasoning behind painting this is simple: I wanted to protect the backside with epoxy as soon as possible after blasting it, and if I’m going to epoxy it, I might as well go wet on wet and shoot the color on it all at the same time.

I used base/clear because A) it’s what I already had on hand, and B) because this color isn’t available in single stage.

Next up, filler work on the outside of this piece and the tail panel.
👍🏻

Outstanding. It's almost relieving to see it go together so well, and I say that as an onlooker. I sure love that blue too!

Thanks Johnny. If it’s relieving for you to see it go together well, you can just imagine how relieving it was for me! It’s so satisfying when all the bolts align perfectly and go straight in without any trouble.

The blue is my favourite as well, it’s Viper Blue Pearl. I had to try and visualize where the two tone break was going to be across the back of the car underneath the trunk lid to know what color this had to be. The two tone break on the outside is easy, but it became a little more difficult to picture in relation to the tail panel inside the jambs.

I can’t wait until I finally get to a point where I can see the two colors, the dark grey and this blue together side by side.
They should look great together.

Finally getting caught up! I forgot how motovational this build is. Props on getting that rear all situated! It's great to see some color getting sprayed!

Thank you!

On the wiring bit, up front may give you some troubles with the LED bulbs. GM has the current flowing both ways through the 194 markers in my GMT400s which makes the blinkers go wonky with headlights on. I ended up both adding resistors so the blinker indicators inside the truck wouldn't always be on with headlights on and a much easier fix was the LED blinker relay to kill the hyperflash. I think if you're more selective than I was with the bulbs this can be avoided. I just wasn't aware of the weirdness in GM's blinker wiring. Though I should have been because even my C5Z is wired this way. The schematic really had me scratching my head before I was able to dive into troubleshooting.

Thanks for the heads up on that. While I do have LED bulbs for the signal lights up front (sequential if you recall), I have eliminated the side marker lights, both front and rear. So not too worried about that. My only real concern though is the LED’s (front and rear) putting enough of an electrical load on to make the flasher function correctly.

If not, I’m hoping that using an electronic flasher will work.

Great work as always Donovan! Although most people will see your fabricated piece on the car when its all finished, I think that most people will think that it came from the factory that way. That blue is a beautiful colour too!

Thanks Jeff!

Seeing how you deleted the part that makes it weird, I'm inclined to thinking you'll be OK with that magical relay alone. Just know that when you burn out a filament/bulb, it doesn't blink faster to alert you to that fact. Also, kickass work on that metal!
