I have not owned a high stall type torque converter, how streetable is it? I'm not taking my car to any drag strip as thats nowhere to be find here so this is a strictly supposed to be a fast car on the street not stand still launching. So far to my rough calculations a 4l80e is about 2 or 3 grand cheaper than a t56 magnum.
I can get a th350c with converter for about 2-3 grand cheaper than the 4l80e would cost to swap in.
Edit: By fast car i mean as long as it would technically go 14s in the 1/4 mile i would call it fast. Better said it would be a normal street car with reliable 450hp would be plenty for now
The newer T56/Magnum have a lot of shifter modularity.. I'm running an old T56 with shifter in the rear.
im 5'10 with 31-32" inseam and bench seat.
There's roughly 1/4-3/8" clearance between shifter and seat in 2/4/6 gears. The magnum would allow you to move the shifter forward 1-3" iirc.. before really jumping forward...I'll take some better pictures tomorrow
If I do it again, I'd get a magnum with 2.97 1st with .62 6th, run ~3.73 gears with a 25-26" tall tire(275/40/17) put you ~2300rpm at ~75mph in 6th
Found a pic of my trans out of the car..
I'm rather jealous of the flexibility the newer stuff has..😞
There is neutral and reverse lock out plugs available as well
A little late to the thread but back like 14-15 years ago I swapped my first Cutlass.
It was nothing crazy. Heathy 355 sbc with a T-5 from a third gen Camaro.
I used a JohnB pedal and 4 forth gen Camaro hydraulics. I went with a stock replacement clutch to use as a fuse between the 355 and the weak T-5.
I was 17-18yo. To this day I miss that car so much and regret having to get rid of it.
It was so much fun. So easy to drive. So nice to cruise. That thread is still on this forum through my old username.
I would love to manual swap my current Cutlass but I plan to do drag and drives and would want to wife to drive it as well.
I can say I really want to get another G either a Malibu or Regal and that one will 100% get a manual. Likely a simple ls3/T-56. Mid N/A LS deal.

This F-Body Adjustable Clutch Master Cylinder Kit solves many drivability issues with your manual transmission F-body (Camaro, Firebird, Trans Am). The adjustability allows for use with aftermarket performance clutches and solves issues that plague OEM clutches.

I can say that is the only issue I ever had.
The pedal being so stiff I bent and snapped the first rod on the master. The second one bent but didn't snap, I got it straight and ran a sleeve over it it to strengthen it. The next bilt will be using the three pedal kit.

Well I see the "stick" guys rule, BUT I have a 2004R in my Nova, with an old 350 motor, works great. I have a 700R4 in my '84 Elky behind a 400 HP 400 small block. works good, shift like I want. I like it. I'm using 3.73 gears, posi in both. But Then I'm an old guy, 80 just nice and simple to drive. I've got a 4L60E in the shop for the new build on the Nova with a 400 SB. So I'd go with a built 700r4. A well built one ought to do 500 HP easy.
IMO go to the Auto, but really, It's your baby, go with what trips your trigger.
justdandy given today's availability of stand-alone system.. between US Shift and FAST/TCI.. they both can run TCC lockup in 2/3/4 gears with paddle shifters with full manual shift controls... And they're starting to get full stand alone for the 6L80/6L90 transmission as well..
You're 4-5k into 4L80 that can handle same 7-750 TQ a T56 Magnum can handle.. minus install cost
I would love to put a manual behind the lb7 i'm putting in my El Camino, but I'm not spending the money for a transmission and clutch for what it will take to hold up behind that. A zf6 or nv4500 is too big physically for that.
