So I replaced the heater core on my 87 Cutlass and I sometimes smell a pervasive odor of gas. I feel like it usually happens when it's windy outside the car. Could this be fumes leaking/being blown from the engine bay through the heater box? Or are there other reasons I might smell gas?

I've unscrewed the spring, but the wires with the hook ends won't fit through the opening in the header panel. It looks like I'll have to cut them. Is there a way to get it off without wrecking it or cutting the wire? Or are replacement wires available?
