BUILD THREAD Project Diesel No More/Teen Dreams Realized

What a nice, emissions-exempt survivor you found. I looked at a diesel Malibu wagon in 1987. Wish I knew then what I know now, and chose it over the one I bought with the gas V6.

'Remove from service' dates on compressors?

Campbell Hausfield is (was) the largest compressor manufacturer in the world. That said, a high percentage of their products are for 'non-industrial' use - Bob Homeowner. Who drains and condensation from the tank regularly. Yeah. CH probably did a calculation on an estimated corrosion rate, and...

    Colorado emissions testing questions

Matches my future priorities as well. 4000 sf shop with all the bits laid out for each project and a 600 sf house that I can clean in an hour.

    BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

This is why I subscribe to Donovan's threads: Serious gratitude for contributing to the tribal knowledge and education of us wannabes whose standards far exceed our personal skills... In the past, people have asked me how I learned to 'fix cars'. Mostly trial and error, mixed with a lack of...

I am new here from switzerland with a 1978 Monte Carlo!

Louis Chevrolet was born in La Chaux de Fonds, in the western part of Switzerland. In 1979-1980, when the US economy was in recession, Chevrolets were 'cheap' and popular. There are a remarkable number of Swiss survivors from that era.

    Ignition cylinder

How worn are your keys? The base of the ignition lock pushes a rod that runs down to a switch on the base of the column. The lock is cheap, and while you've got to pull the steering wheel off to get down the the retaining screw. Search for a column rebuild post from Oldsofb that has lots of...

    8.5 in rearend

"This process is excruciating." I appreciate your efforts to document actual work on this 40- year old hardware. It seems that most advice requests are from those unwilling to invest the time to give back to the Tribe. You're earning your stripes. Thank you.

    Tailgate lock

In an extreme case, could you unbolt the glass hinges from inside the car, then slim-jim the latches on either side of the gate. With help, then you could let the latched glass and gate down, prop it carefully and remove the inner panel.

    Seat recline mechanism...

Not sure if this will apply to your high-back buckets, but I swapped mechanisms from a pair of S10 seats. https://gbodyforum.com/threads/1980-malibu-coupe-3-3-liters-to-6-6-liters.52449/post-781477

    Tailgate lock

Mine got jammed. I tried to open it on and off for a year. Then one random day, I put the key in and wiggled it and the lock at the same time and it just opened. Curse gone. I took the panel off and lubed everything and have not had trouble since.

What did you do to your non-G body project today? [2023]

My experience with Michelins is that they have both good traction and long tread wear, usually opposites. But, don't let them sit in the sun at elevation. The UV makes the sidewalls start to crack long before the tread thins out. For those that log a lot of miles weekly, you are golden...
