    Holley pump cam help

Jim, you aren't kidding. I bought my Dad his first real timing light for Christmas with my paper route money. A Sears Craftsman with the spring that went over the spark plug. He futzed with old VW beetles, and things like metric tools were not in the budget. We take a lot for granted these days.

    Holley pump cam help

Anyone ever set the base timing with a vacuum gauge? I once had a problematic Pontiac 400 that would not idle for shiznit. So I read about using a vacuum gauge and I hooked it up to manifold vacuum. I turned the distributor around until I got the most vacuum at idle. Then I noted what the timing...

    Holley pump cam help

I thank you all for the great input. As I said in the beginning, I know dick about Holleys. But I am learning, slowly. What I do adhere to, is 'do one thing at a time'. If not, you have no idea which thing worked. So when he gets the cam kit, we start there. Quick question: I set the fuel...

    Super T10 Shifter Location

In my 1968 Firebird I put a 1979 ST-10. By using the 1968 Firebird Saginaw bent-over shifter, I got it to fit the OEM console. BUT- I had to have friend fabricate a mount that fit the ST-10/Hurst shifter. It is one of none.

'Remove from service' dates on compressors?

I am actually pretty anal about draining tanks. In Germany, our Engineer Battalion had a lot of Duece-and-a-halfs. You had to drain the air brakes tanks after every use. If the Motor Daddy came along and found water in a tank, expect KP.

    Super T10 Shifter Location

Our cars only came with the Saginaw manual transmission. It had a shifter mounting plate that moved the shifter about six inches forward of where a traditional shifter would mount. That was to clear the bench seat that was standard issue. Any other trans like an ST-10 or Muncie would have the...

    Holley pump cam help

Good info Ernest. Thanks! The 6° BTDC timing was set by the shop old timer that installed the engine. So was the Uni-Lite distributor. This car always ran great for many years. No complaints. Then it sat for a long time. Now that it is back on the road, the owner tossed the carb that was on...

    Holley pump cam help

Stock out-of-the-box I assume the 30cc pump. Right now power valves and jets are above my pay grade. But as my buddy said, 'You may suck at Holley's now, but you will be an expert by the time we are through!'.

'Remove from service' dates on compressors?

That was new for me too. But they are there. Often hidden, or hard to find. I almost bought a small Craftsman pancake unit for tires and stuff around the garage. But I went to the Lowes and inspected it. Yup- 'remove from service'. I agree about old time stuff being better. I know of several...

    Holley pump cam help

I stand corrected. You were right, as explained in Jim's video. We are at 650 rpm idle so it will be the #1 hole for our car. I'm learning!

Jim, that is the best video I have seen yet. He explains it all in real world terms. Thanks!!!

'Remove from service' dates on compressors?

Rktpwrd, that is great info! Have you seen the videos where a guy tests a tank himself? They remove all the air, fill it with water, and add pressure either with a power washer, or a grease gun. They add a pressure gauge in a fitting and raise the pressure to 150% of the rated capacity. If it...

What did you do to your non-G body project today? [2023]

Back at the 48 SPL. I guess some prior owner had removed the shift linkage. The detent ball, spring, and guide, must have shot out and disappeared, because they were missing. Those three parts cost over $50 new, but I found two used complete sets on Fleabay for $25. Once they were inserted back...

    Holley pump cam help

I went back today to see what was up. We were able to clean off the timing tab enough to see that the timing was set at 6° BTDC. The ported vacuum advance was working well. We also tried hooking the advance to full manifold vacuum. The idle rose about 100 rpm, but the idle got raggedy. It did...

'Remove from service' dates on compressors?

With what new compressors are costing nowadays, I wonder if it is worth it to have the old tank tested? I used to have scuba tanks tested at a fire equipment place. The old steel tanks would then get rolled with abrasive inside to remove any rust. I guess they could hydro-statically test the...

I'm glad it worked out. IIRC I think the Fleabay deal was Speed Direct itself selling on that site. Free shipping too. I went with it because every other vendor wanted almost twice the price.

    Holley pump cam help

No, I don't think so. It is an aluminum dual plane manifold and the Holley fits without an adapter. The carb that was on was very old and dirty. I would have re-built it, but he has few skills, and just went and bought a new one. I agree with that. I am a Q-jet guy and I cringe when people...
