hey guys,

have to get a diff cover for 12 bolt going in my 81 malibu.

fresh 4.56 strange spool c clip eliminators. 4500 8" stall. race weight aprox 3000lbs

this car will run around 12 flat , 110mph. trailor / track only. not a whole lot of power.

basically do i get a standard 29$ stock cover, or go with the 165$ Moser cover? is the better cover worth it in this situation?

(fyi my 4 door '83 has over 1200 passes with slicks, 3000stall 4.11 avergaes 12.85 @ 104, stock 7.5 rear with mini spool..
maybe im just lucky)

Your call - imo your not throwing that much power at it, stock will be fine. That's a lot of years of racing on that rear end.

No mention on engine, sbc or bbc. As lilbowtie mention you ain't got the HP/tq to worry about it. The only reason l bring up sbc or bbc is a bbc can have massive tq but little hp an tq kills off the line.

That rearends pretty strong!

But if your going to put new cover on it may as well be a girdle, alittle extra insurance incase you up-grade engine an IMO they look cooler. I have them on all my classics.

Thanks guys

Bob64 the motor is a bit of a weird combo,

355sbc stock fresh bottom end cast dish.
64cc/215cc dart iron eagles (overkill but picked them up for nothing)
Offenhouser open plenum intake, new holley full mechanical.

Mechanical flat tappet 106 lobe 530lift
And 245@50. Rated 2800-6200

With 28" slick I imagine I'd both shift and trap around 6400rpm

Might be a good 375hpnonot too sure

Well you have no worries with that 12 bolt. As for girdle or not l guess that comes down to plans or where you want the car in the end and ofcourse $.

I has 3 classics all bbc and all have girdles, but l do have a tendency to open the rearends up here and there for piece of mind. In saying that cheap covers bend an twist when removing an may not always seal 100%, atleast in my mind, so a Mozer Girdle is thick, so not much chance on bending. Chrome covers can rust over time and look cheesy. Paint your old one if you don't want to spend the coin, they look good painted.

IMO you need a Girdle after 500hp/500tq.

Thanks man,
Just bough a basic new chrome one.

Previous owner blew a mini spool, shot three original cover.

Basically found the 12bolt for 50$, was already fitted to a g body, with axles and c clip eliminators. Guts were scrap.

Few hours of driving but still a great deal.

If you have the money to do it, do it... But as it sits, IMHO, it's fine.

People tend to not pay homage to their rear diff until they have to... Getting ahead of the game for future enhancements (After all, who is EVER satisfied with their HP/TQ, right?) you would be ready for it.

I bought the T/A girdle cover. I wanted the extra strength plus a cover with fill and drain holes.
