i am currently looking to purchase a 12 bolt rear from a 68-72 chevelle and was wondering whats a good price there not brand new or anything my buddy has a couple. One is from a 69 its limited slip with i belive 3.28s or 3.55s i dont remember he wants 220 than he has a housing that i can build up and he said i can have it for 75 than he has a couple that need rebuild that he'll take 150 for what would you guys think would be the best option budget wise im kind of leaning towards the complete one thats ready to go for 220 than all i need is gears and a posi if im correct.

I cant help you with price but when I buy something used whether it is from a buddy or not I typically go into it thinking it will have to be completely rebuilt. I would keep that in mind if you buy one. Most of these old rear ends have never had a fluid change or even bearings. Good luck.

that is true well what does a rearend build consist of

I say buy them all and sell what you don't want/use....I scored a '69 Chevelle 12 bolt w/3.31 gears in it about 7 years ago for $800.00, and that was one hell of a deal!!!

The rear end came complete drum to drum, even had new shoes as well.....It's a posi rear end and they have the stock 30 spline axles...With regars to the one you can STeal for $220.00, you don't need anything if it's limited slip...Throw that b*tch in your car and call it a day...You will need the 12 bolt swap upper control arms from UMI Performance or Iceman racing...

Does anyone know how to tell a Chevy 12 bolt from the olds

NP there, when looking at the cover, look at the bottom and u will see two bolts parallel to each other on the 12 bolt. On the otheres the will only be one at the very bottom because the housing and cover is so much smaller.
