i KNOW THAT not as many guys have a/c that do not have a/c, but I am gonna try to get mine up and running. I have all the hardware, hoses, compressor all ready . Now when it came to fill my system The (ancient) r12 re-fill hose that I have doesn't fit my low side port. Luckilly I do have a case of r12 from years ago. I can remember useing 20 years ago. But I can't figure what is wrong here.
It would be realitive easy to switch over to 134a but I hear it is no comparison to r12. What is your take. And any hints on my delima with findind the correct r12 hose would be helpfull. thanks!!!

well, i have to say sell the R-12, it's worth a friggin butload of money! 10yrs ago a 20lb cylinder way worth over $1000
R134 is a good freon and works just as well as 12 if installed correctly. you have to make sure to vacuum it out to 32in. that's what people always ignore.
sorry i couldn't answer the actual question.

Isn't R-12 a screw on fitting? Someone may have already put a 134a adapter on your system. I hope they did the conversion correctly, some guys just charge it up and call it a day. I converted to this stuff http://autorefrigerants.com/co00033.htm and I am very pleased with the results. As a plus, it is compatible with the original mineral oil so I just vacuumed it down and filled it up, took only 3 cans to do the trick. I get 40* at the outlets on a 90* day. The site has every kind of filler adapter you may need and several types of refrigerants, I chose the ES-12. As stated, you can sell the R-12 to someone who absolutely needs it and make a profit.

Some say that they wouldn't use the Hydro-carbon mix refrigerant. But after looking at the price I think I might give it a try. Right now if I could find the Right hose I would put in a couple cans of the r12 to see how well it does.
And I thought that someone could have changed the low side port size to something else. But it's still the 1/4 flare that is supposed to be there.
OH YEAH, AND HOW much r12 will it take to fill a system. I know some stuff takes less some more. But to start how much r12 will fit in a g-body system. anyone know???????????

I have personally converted several of my cars over to R-134, including a couple of 1980s GMs, and cooling is no problem. The A/C works great. I did nothing special, though in one case the compressor was bad so I had to flush the system and I replaced all the O-rings while I had it apart. New compressor, new oil, vacuum, and new freon. Works great. "They" seem to be looking at the theoretical cooling capacity of R12 vs R134, but from a practical standpoint it works fine.

If you need an old R12 refill hose, I have one I can give you. I converted my system over to R134A and am happy with it. Just let me know if you want it and I'll dig it out.
