17x7.5... 4.5" backspace?

Do you have modified suspension and/or brakes? What kind of clearance are you concerned with?
I have seen 5 inch backspace on the rear of a Malibu and 4.75 on the front. So yes, both options you mentioned will fit/work fine.

I'm only concerned with the front wheels on the control arm or sway bar. But if 4.75 will work, then 4.75 is where I'll be. I'm also a little worried about it looking stupid with too much backspace on a 7.5" rim, but hopefully it wont be too noticeable.

So far in my quest for wheels it seems like anything more than 4.5" backspace rub on something.my 86 15" z28 wheels hit my front upper control arms.

I then bought a set of 16" american racing wheels of a camaro/firebird(dont know what year) those hit the tie rod ends and rubbed the rear frame.

17 and 18s might be a different story

I'll lay it all out, even though I didn't want to mention the word "spacer." I found these wheels cheap and realized that I could make them work with a 1" spacer. Turns out the backspace on the rims is almost 6" while I thought they were 5.75". The whole time I was thinking about backspace I didn't even consider what I'll call front space. Now that I've had them up to the car and done some measuring it looks like a 2" spacer will almost get them back out to where the 245 60s are sitting now. They do rub the wheel well a bit though so a little further inward isn't bad.

I can't get a 1.5" spacer from mopac and to order them online is double the price or more. All they offer is a 1.25 or 2". I guess what I'm getting at is will it look stupid on this 7.5" rim (42mm offset) if I only use a 1.25" spacer?
