Hey guys I'm sorry to post this I'm sure its probably been covered numerous times. But I'm trying to figure out what a safe backspacing would be to give me some options with tire fitment. Reason I'm asking this is cause I got a set of eagle alloy 18's on trade cause the guy owed me money. They are 18x9 with what looked to be a 6 inch backspacing 5 on 4.5 lug pattern. Obviously I know the pattern wont fit my car (1981 4 door malibu). The tires are almost new on them, and to be honest the ones I have on my car right now are absolutely shot. I figured spending a hundred dollars for a set of adapters that you bolt to your hub would really be worth it considering thats all I'd have in the whole setup. The tire dimensions are about 25 inches by about 9 and 1/2.

I dont have a great grasp of wheel fitment. But if I was to get like say a 1 and 1/2 inch spacer/adapter that would give me a total backspacing of about 4.5 considering I began with a wheel with 6 inches. Correct?? and if I were to run a 18x9 wheel with 4 and 1/2 inches of backspacing would that give me a little flexibility in the future with regards to rear tire fitment? I'd like to eventually get something a little taller and wider (nothing crazy).

Thank you for your time I greatly appreciate any help with figuring this out.
