just got a 78 malibu and a 200 chevy truck..im wanting to swap the engine from the truck to the malibu and was hoping someone could help me out..id like to know what all im gonna need to do as i want to do this myself..wiring, fuel, motor mounts, transmission/crossmember, etc..im mainly trying to figure out how to wire this thing up once i get it in there right now..make my own wiring harness? or does someone make a wiring harness to hook straight into that motor and is compatible with the malibu?

If you have the whole truck, just use the engine wiring harness that is with the engine.

I think this is the fourth or fifth time in a short amount of time this has come up. I'm going to do a write up on this in the near future. Would also be a nice sticky.

Here are some of the basics you will need. First you need to get 1" setback adapter plates for the engine. This will make the gen 1 small block Chevy motor mounts work, and place the engine in the factory location. The truck oil pan will have to be changed out for either a muscle car swap pan, or a caddy ctsv pan. The ctsv pan will give the best ground clearance. Next would be the swap pan. You can use an LS1 f-body pan, but the crossmember will need to be modified for it to fit properly.

IF your using an old school transmission, you will need a spacer and longer bolts for the flex plate. Truck accessories, except the a/c compressor, will fit a g-body, but you may need a smaller power steering pulley for it to clear the gearbox. For the a/c compressor to fit, the frame will have to be notched. f-body accessories also work, but you have the same problem with the a/c compressor. The #8 coil pack will probably interfere with the a/c box. the box will need to be modified for it to clear.

For fuel injection, if you have a drive by wire throttle body, you will either need the gas pedal that goes with it, or switch it out for a cable driven one. If its already cable driven, don't worry about it. the computer will have to be retuned, and you will need a modded wire harness for the injection system. There are a lot of companies that do both out there. I have only done a carb ls swap, so I only know the basics when it comes to swapping in with fuel injection. For tuning, you can buy a copy of HP tuners and do it your self, its around $600.00 for the software last time I checked though. You can mod your factory harness you have, same one mod it for you, or buy a custom make harness.

Good info there.
