1978 monte carlo a/c system

I have a 1978 monte carlo replaced the a/c compressor
and evaporator but don't recall If the a/c system for that year supose to
Have an orfice tube. I installed an orfice tube inside on the small
Line connected to the evap. That did not work my low side
Was High and my high side was low.I also try with out
The orfice tube a/c works ok but presure on low side is 20 low and high
Side is 100 or so little low. It only take one can 10oz with out the orfice
Tube no more I know it take more a/c freon.Can any one give me some
Info? Or when I had the orfice tube inside the line
Was it install back wards maybe.But does it matter if
Intstall back wards.
