so would that cause my battery to drain when i drive it.is there surpose to be a ground wire hooked up to the passenger side front fender from the negative cable on the battery?

Yes. And the battery will drain if the alt is not in the loop. That means the alt must be connected to the battery, either at the batt itself, or at the starter. Most cars have a big red 10 gauge wire going from the alt's "batt" terminal, the one with a stud and nut, right to the battery. Run one and see if she starts charging.

would me replaceing my old wiring harness with a 79 cutlass wiring harness make a differnce .it was draining before but maybe i made some other issue?if i have two red wires comeing from the harness do they both goto the starter[big bolt] but then how would i hook up the alt?i think the last owner messed with the engine wires

What size terminals are on the red wires? Big ones go to the starter battery wire. Small ones would go to the alt or batt.

well when i first looked at the wires on the starter there was a[ purple solenoidwire]and on the big starter bolt there was one connection with two red wires but a couple of months ago one of the red wires touched the exhaust manifold and it burnt up so i cut that connection and made them seperate.but right now theres only one red wire on with the battery cable the other red wire is connected two a little tiny bolt next to it and my lights dont work or the cig lighter.....do you think that would cause my battery to dran?

hey will an alternator still turn off if its not connected the big bolt of a starter and if its on the little tiny bolt ?that would drain my battery right ?

Yes, that sounds like your problem. Replace that fusible link, connect the red wire to the other red wires on the battery cable, and ignore that other little post on the solenoid. It is for points ignition cars. All red wires are supposed to go to 12v battery power. I'm betting that one you have going to the solenoid is the headlights and cigar lighter wire.

OH WELL the red wire isnt on the solenid its on the starter right next to 12v bolt. only one red wire is on with the battery cable.i think thats why the lights dnt work too but would that drain my battery?
