hey i have a 1978 BUICK REGAL that i have recently pulled the 3.8 out and put in a 305(i got for free) and built it from bottom up,,,,, i have edelbrock performer cam and lifter setup with 600 edelbrock perfromer carb and intake, motor bored .15 over for the rust in walls and the big 350 heads on it 1.92 or .94 i cant remember, also have the th350 turbo transmission with shift kit, headers with cherry bomb glass packs, and aluminum radiator, its not all that fast right now i can feel the power but its not gettin to the wheels so i bought a rear end out of a 86 monte with 4.11 gears(POSI TRAC UNIT)wondering if it will change anything drastically or a mild change in my horsepower?????? :?:

Few things..
Save your money ... I would ditch that 305.. You can make so much more power with a 350 with the same money you would spend on that 305...trust me on this one.. I would see what is in that TH350.. here is where your options can also get expensive.. stall speed.. rebuild kits... street/strip applications.. daily driver? If you're putting 4.11's in the rear it may be more suited for the strip.. try taking a nice long drive with those gears in the rear.. That 305 will be screaming and you probably will be rebuilding it shortly.. I blew up a 305 back in the 80's, it could not take the high RPMs like I thought..
That rear sounds like it will hold up..as long as it was put together right.. and you will notice a big difference in the first 60 ft and even to the 1/8 mile compared to that stock rear.. what happens in higher RPMs at longer distances? it will fall flat on it's face with those 4.11s and mild hp engine..160-250 hp. I'll be suprised if you're getting more than that out of the 305.
remember those tpi 305 in the camaros in the early 80's? My friends nova with a 350 dusted them everytime.. Right Billy 🙂
You might have too much cam or too big of heads.. The cams are the secret.. with the head and intake combo to match..
see what people are running at the track and see what their times are like.. this may give you a general ball park of what you can expect.. There are always secrets that a racer will never give up.. so just remember not all secrets are give out..
Would you give your rival all your secrets? I hope not..

Trust me, I went this route to only be disappointed and spending twice as much as I should have.. doing things twice..
My new project is a 454 block, 400 trans, 9" ford rear, 8-71 blower, with a bunch of serious goodies.. it won't be cheap.. but I am doing the research to do it right the first time.. 600-750 hp on pump gas is my goal.. I also have an 88 mustang gt that has a heavily modified 302 block and internals.. I have a big cam, heads, injectors, intake and a S/C to move all that air.. It has around 600 hp and I won't give out any secret specs.. because that is how you can get beat.. I tell people that I have a bad exaust leak and that whining is a bad powersteering pump and belt.. People always get a kick out of that..

Good luck man..

my regal came with a 305 in and i we rebuilt it and put a bigger comp cams cam in it an air gap manfiold and headers and all that good stuff. we also switched the rear end gear to a 3.42 and it fell on its face at about 5700 rpm and the fastest i ever got it to go was a 14.4 at 92 mph thats with a turbo 350 with a shift kit in it. i have since ditched the 305 for a 355 and am much happier now running 13.39 at 100.37 mph with the same cam that was in the 305 and a set of ported 292 turbo cylinder heads.
