1979 malibu wagon

I have bought this wagon from California a year ago ,just started working on now ,I can’t get it to stay running after the gas I pour in runs dry ,the car hasn’t run for twenty years ,also I can’t get fuel line off the back of carb with out twisting fuel line ,do I have to replace fuel line ,pump ,and tank first

You need to hold the adaptor / fuel filter holder that goes into the carburetor body with one wrench while you loosen the compression nut on the fuel line.
 
Fuel line is on the front of the carb. It faces the passenger side and is a 5/8"nut that screws into the fuel filter on the carb which is 1". The line on the back side of the carb is a vacuum line that goes to the brake booster. I recommend used a line wrench when working with the fuel line nut at the carb. Less tendency of rounding the nut.

When you finally get the fuel line disconnected, grab some sort of jug to put the line into, then crank the engine to make sure that the fuel pump is working.
