Is it an olds 350 you're putting in?

There are numbers cast into the flat behind the water pump, next to the oil fill tube, that will tell you what the block is. A large 2 to the right of the smaller numbers denotes a 350 whereas a large 4 or 4A is a 403 according to Bill Travato's book.

The 1977 and later blocks also have displacent in big numbers on the side.

They used 7/16" head bolts on 76 and older and 1/2" bolts on 77 and newer. An A or B in casting number behind the water pump below the oil fill tube is dead giveaway to a 77 and later block, along with the displacement cast in the side of the block in big numbers.
