I was going to go with cc651 springs in the rear. Took me a while to find the spring rates and install heights of 507s.

CC627 107 lb/in 600lbs @ 10" FH=15.63"
CC651 116 lb/in 405lbs @ 11" FH=14.63"
CC507 158 lb/in 849lbs @ 10" FH=15.38"

The 507s might be better since I actually use my el camino as a truck sometimes and plan on 275/60s and don't want to roll the fender lip. I still think I will go with 5662s since that is what I used in my Malibu and liked them, plus the BBC going in will be a bit more weight.

@81 Regal, I will send you a message

I wasn't aware that you could get a 4 speed with the V6 in 1981. I thought that you could only get the 3 speed manual with the V6. A V6/4 speed would be a rare vehicle.

It has a hurst shifter so someone already has been modifying it some, but I can't tell if the 4 speed is original. It is an 81 so there is no build RPO sticker on the glove box and I haven't found it yet. I hope to still find it when i tear apart the interior in the next few weeks.

I noticed that my interior is 2 colors. The dash and the console are a medium brown, and the carpet, seats, and all interior trim is lighter tan. Is that normal/factory? I want to keep it factory looking when I fix up the interior and respray and change out of of the panels.

I had an 81 Malibu Classic...interior had the same color combo...but my buckets were fabric.

Got a few minutes to work on it. I did a few misc things, but spent a little bit of time under the hood and started to notice that there are a few rig jobs. The speedo cable for some reason is extra long, wraps around my washer fluid bottle to take up the slack, and then is zip tied to the trans crossmember. Noticed a few more wiring hacks to investigate.

This isn't a hack and is factory installed, but I don't know what it is. There is a parallel throttle cable attached to the carb throttle that runs over to the drivers inner fender and goes to this component, then it exits with vacuum tubing, which then goes to what looks like some solenoids, and then the vacuum tube continues and runs deep down into the drivers side of the engine compartment.

Any idea on what this is and its function?

It looks like some type of aftermarket cruise control.

I'd have to agree. It looks like some kind of aftermarket cruise control setup. You might want to see if there's some kind of speed sensor on or near the driveshaft or rear axle. Some of the aftermarket cruise units had this type of sensor.

Managed to get a few hours in on it.

1. You guys were spot on about the aftermarket cruise control. It took me about 2 hours to completely remove it all, but that is what it was. Removing that fixed a lot of the junk wiring. That was also the reason for the extra long speedo cable. There was an additional section of speedo cable in the middle that had the cruise sensor. Also got rid of the extra vacuum tubing it was using and throttle switch, etc.

2. Pulled the radiator since it was leaking. Once I got it out I could see that it wasn't salvageable. Might as well buy a v8 radiator now since I need to get one for later.

3. Since I had the radiator out, I pulled the AC condenser out to trash it and got rid of the AC compressor. The AC compressor didn't have the belt on it so it hasn't been used for some time.

4. Started to investigate some of the wiring under the dash and behind the radio. Cleaned up some of it, but didn't resolve my main electrical issue. I do not have wipers, washer, horn, turn signals, dome light, or blower motor. Once I got rid of the cruise control junk I didn't see anything obviously wrong. The fuse box looks pretty sparse, but don't see anything overall really missing. I pulled all the fuses and none looked obviously blown, but haven't checked with a meter. Any good starting points to try?

Here's a pic of one fuseblock I pulled from an 82 SS Camino...not sure if it will help but you never know...

Looks like the block is upside down in this pic as to how it would be installed in the car....
