1982 El camino grill and bezels

Im trying to figure out what is the best way to strip the light bezels and grill for my elco primer them and repaint them a new color. Sugguestions Gbody fam? 😀

i'd sand them real good with some real fine sandpaper, primer them, then shoot them

Anytime you're spraying something like plastic or chrome, an adhesion promoter is a good idea. SEM has it in spraycans.

could not agree more it helped when i painted my chrome stuff white...for the monochrome look

I was told to sand them with 80 grit then work my way up to 400 then 600 grit then primer and spray. Thing is ive been sanding them for a while and its taking a while for the chrome paint to come off completely. Do i sand them down to bare plastic or just scuff them and primer. Im getting impatient and want to just dropped them in some paint thinner(somebody told me that this wouldnt be a good idea). This is my first car and gbody so its a learning process. :?

i scuffedmine good adhesion promotor and primer

80 grit too coarse, 400 to 600 or preferably fine synthetic scuffing pads are best. Just need to loose the high gloss & smoothness. Final wipe with isopropyl rubbing alcohol.

Thanks yall for the information and I will be posted some before and after pics of the bezel project for yall to see the results. Can anyone school me on the catergories of grit and wat they are primarly used for so I can prevent future mistakes lol. For example 80 grit is for removing expoxy and other hard like substances. So Im looking for a grit chart so to speak
