These are the brackets that you will need. Make sure to pay attention to the part numbers. Firebird and big car mounts look similar, but will set the motor higher in the car. The ones pictured are from my car, not for sale.

And here's what the frame side should look like. These are the mounts that can be purchased easily at most auto parts stores. image.jpg image.jpg

Thanks for your help, guys! As I type, the car is coming from Iowa to Lincoln, NE. She'll hang out at a friend's place for a month or so before bringing her home. I'm stuck at home today (5 hours from Lincoln) hoping it'll be a smooth transaction...it's already paid and done. I just hope it's everything I've ever hoped for! I do say that with a certain amount of sarcasm. I'll be heading up there tomorrow to check her out and see "exactly" what I've gotten myself into.

I'm also going to pick up my 400 motor, also in Lincoln, and get the motor and body to at least meet. We won't have time for the swap, yet...maybe Labor Day weekend? I will be bringing back the 200-4R to have it rebuilt and strengthened a little bit.

I'll post up with pictures as soon as I can! Thanks again for all the great advice...keep it coming!

I like it...Looks like original dead paint.. straight and complete. :) Nice find. You'll like it when it's running and driveable.
Thanks for the sneak peek view...;)

Welcome! Listen to these guys, they know what's up. As stated, 301, 350, 400, 455, all need the 301 mounts and perches to fit these cars. After you get the correct mounts and perches you will need to find a way to bolt them to the frame. Here's where it gets interesting. My '81 Malibu was hopelessly Chevy, but my '83 Bonnewagon had the frame holes in the exact right places! Even though the last 301 was used in '81, there they were, and you should be as lucky. If not, then the best way is to drop a short block w/trans in and line everything up. Then either tack weld the mounts in or spray paint them for later re-orientation. Then remove the motor and drill holes for the mount bolts. That's what I did on the Malibu. Now, getting at the inside mount nuts is a b*tch. If the lower control arms are out, you can get at them through there. I chose to cut an access "window" in each front side of the frame so I could stick a long box end wrench in with the nuts taped on, easy peasy. Cooling- a 400 runs hot but mine did just fine with a 3 row brass 6 cylinder radiator. Better is a V-8 style 4 row equivalent single row aluminum radiator like RockAuto sells. A good fitting fan shroud is mandatory and most V-8 models fit the Pontiac motors, I'm using a Monte Carlo 305 model. Pontiac exhaust manifolds made '70 and later will fit our frames because the steering is in front of the axle after '69 and they dump to the rear. I have a manual trans in my wagon and again, Firebird clutch linkage fit with no trouble. The Malibu I had to sledgehammer the floor to get my Pontiac things to fit. Any more questions this is the right place to ask.

I'm guessing this is the one that was on ebay? Considered it myself, but too far to drive for a rusty frame, for me. Good luck with the swap, though.

Yes, this is the one from eBay. I got it for a few bucks less than he was advertising it on Craigslist. I'm really happy with it. There are a few holes in the frame between the rear axle and the bumper, but nothing is going to fall off. The rear window leaks, but again, it can be fixed. All the glass is excellent! The headliner doesn't sag at all, and the doors and windows open and close like new.

The weekend when like clockwork. I had a bunch of things to do and it all went well. I got the motor picked up and brought to the shop. I got the 200-4r trans home. Now the planning stages...It looks like the 454 will come out just as easily as it went in...perhaps easier. I noticed that the heater box (when there AC stuff is) is damaged. I want to replace that because I really want to put the AC back in the car...eventually. The guy I got the motor from, included the mounts on the motor...I just need the frame mounts. He didn't include the exhaust manifolds, so I'll have to do some digging for something there. I'll have about a month of planning and saving before I can get back to work on it over Labor Day weekend.

Here are a few more pics...
