Any Big Blocks under a flat hood out there??

Yep! I'm running a 454 with an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake. It is topped with a 1407 carb and a 14x3 air filter on a drop base. The engine sits on stock SBC engine mounts. I did remove some portions of the underhood ribs, and the air cleaner lid doesn't touch the stock flat hood at all.

If you need a photo, let me know.

Very cool, yea one of where you modified your hood would be great, maybe a few of the engine bay to include by the AC box, curious on fitment. This is great info. Hard choice, guess it will depend on budget. The olds Big Block stuff is getting hard to find and the chevy stuff is everywhere. I am partial to the SBC only because I know that motor very well, so easy for me to work on, tune, etc. But kind of seriously thinking about the BBC.

What headers are you using? Any major fitment issues? I want to keep the column shift, but I can always have my exhaust guy modify the collectors if necessary, he had to for my 403 headers. My car is low so all that comes into play.

thanks again everyone. Awesome info.

Here is a shot showing the hood ribs that I removed:

You can also see the A/C box and all its attachments--I didn't have to remove any of those. (Which is good, as I intend to reinstall the compressor some day.) The BBC is a really nice fit in these cars.

My headers are an unknown brand; I bought them used for $20. Since then, I learned they are a generic style that was sold under multiple brands including FlowTech. I talk about them at length--including how I had to modify them to fit--in my build thread (which you can find in the Build Threads sub forum). Since I'm running a 4L80E, I had to ditch my column shift setup and install a junkyard floor shifter instead.

Okay, cool, thanks again. Will have to check that out about the transmission, would be nice to have an overdrive. Thanks again. Cutting out the ridges doesn't look to hard. BB does look dang good in there!!!

Anyone have any good clearance issues when running a bbc rpm Edelbrock air gap intake
