Hello Fellow G's
I have finally narrowed down the source of my slow battery drain (ignition switch/ steering colmn)
Can anyone advise a source to have mine rebuilt or I could purchase a replacement? My car is a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass with a center console.
I have gone through all of the tests possible to narrow down the source of the problem with no results. The other day I drove the car and programmed my stereo presets. Stopped off to get gas and when I got back into the car, the stereo had completely reset as if the battery terminal had been taken off which leads me to believe that it is in the igntion switch somewhere. Any advise is appreciated... :wtf:

Good luck mines done it since new . Dealer ,me and about 20 other GM guys have checked it out over the years . We pulled all fuses and the like and still had drain. unplugged steering colom ,same ,same . We narrow it down to something in the engine controls system . But what not a clue.

My mom's '88 has a slow battery drain that we've never found. Well, I've never actually looked for it.

The battery will be dead within a couple of days if its not driven. Anymore we just disconnect the negative battery cable to keep it from happening.

The cigarette lighters can be a major pain in out cars. Normally they will blow a fuse but I have seen them cause a battery drain also. Take the faceplate off and unhook the wires to see if that helps. Also the glovebox light can stay on even with the door closed, same with the console if you have one.
May not be the problem but will be places to check if you haven't already.

There is not much that is electrical on the collumn, I would reccomend getting a new ignition switch and replace that, not expensive but a bit of a pain to replace.

That's something that I had not considered..Cheaper and definitely a possibility..I will try that and let you all know. Thanks for the responses..
