I have the gas tank out of my 1987 Cutlass and was wondering which ends of the straps need to be installed first on the car I have the rear staps installed but when I go to put the tank up the fronts of the straps will not reach the holes in the body where the bolts go through can anyone tell me what the problem is or do I install the front straps first(the ones near the rear bumper or what)?THANKS

how can you install a factory gas tank without using the straps to hold it in??

I had the same problem with the efi tank and new straps in my car. After talking with a few guys it semi some cars had 1.5" spacers so in went spacers and longer bolts and everything was good to go

I used longer bolts to get things started and held in place. Then went back and replaced each of those bolts with shorter bolts.

I installed the bolts on the bumper side of the tank the then then the inside ones. If you're doing it alone use your floor jack with a 2x6 piece of wood or something similar with a rag on it so you don't scratch the tank. Use it to support the tank do not raise it to the point where you are putting pressure to bend the tank.

I would also do what FE3X CLONE said starting with the longer bolts.
