I found an Astro with a 700R4 locally. Will it fit my car?

Yes and no. It can be made to fit with a bellhousing adapter, custom crossmember and a shortened driveshaft for starters. But no it really isn't a bolt in replacement. You would be better of looking for a 2004r that will go in with less complication.

I already planned on a new cfrossmember & driveshaft - I'm also swapping the rearend to an 8.5 over the winter. While a 200R4 will go in with less trouble, how will it stand up behind the 403 I plan on building for it?

if your building an engine to have some extra hp you'll be disappointed with the 700 r4....it has a lower first gear than a 200 4r but it hits a wall when it drops in 2nd...the 200 4r has much better gear ratios and they can built to withstand alot of HP

x2, 700r4 is a truck transmission with a nice torque-y first gear

I vote a 3 speed unless you do a lot of highway driving. IMO a th350 has the best gear ratios of all of them

Depends on how much power you are planning. If its high enough either transmission will need some help. I'm assuming you know the 8.5 will require a shorter driveshaft also, right? Th e biggest problem you are facing is that the 700r4 won't bolt to your 403, unless you use an adapter. If that's ok then go for it. I agree with the first gear being low in the 700 also, but with enough torque its not a big deal.

Another thing to look for is the speedo gear, if its a new enough astro then it will have an electical sender for the speedo not a cable.

TH350 is pretty close to the 200R4 but I prefer to have the OD for a driver

Powerglide 1.76 1.00
TH350 2.52 1.52 1.00
TH400 2.48 1.48 1.00
200r4 2.74 1.57 1.00 0.67
700r4 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70
4L60E 3.06 1.62 1.00 0.70
4L80E 2.48 1.48 1.00 0.75

I'll have to start looking for a 200R4 then. It's a winter project so I'll have to start looking now.

you might want to have it upgraded so it'll be more than capable of handling the hp of your engine....

I found this and thought you might be able to relate to it..

I plan on rebuilding it with a B&M Transkit or similar. It's not going to be handling incredible amounts of horsepower, since it will still be a daily driver. i just want a daily driver than can run 14s. 😀
