Before buying, be SURE it's a posi rear, and be sure it's the ratio you want. A code will be stamped on the front of the pass side of the axle tube. You will need to know the codes for the ratio you seek and factory manuals are about the only place that shows them. For example, an 83' Pontiac "G" series wagon with a 3:23 posi would be 2BU. Best way is to open the cover and look on the ring gear, it will have 2 numbers, one for the ring gear and one for the pinion. Divide the ring gear by the pinion to get your ratio. The posi clutches will be obvious. I was at an indoor swap meet at in Allentown PA and a guy swore he was selling a 3:23 posi rear. I had a socket and I opened it up- lo and behold it was a 2:41 non posi. So buyer beware!

driveability can also depend on what trans. do you have a th350, 200-4r, or th200?

Thanks guys for helping fill in some info. I waz purty tired last nite ....

The 3.42 gears were available in cars without the overdrive.
The 3.73 gears were available incars with the overdrive trans.

Both could be had with or without posi. Check it. In the 20+ years the rearend could have been swapped.

Unless you plan on an overdrive transmission in the (near) future, I'd stick with the 3.42's. With the 3.73's an no OD trans, your highway rpm is getting up near (or over depending on rear tire size) 3000 rpm.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 3.42's only came in the SS. The 442, H/O, and GN got 8.5"s with the 442's being 3.73.

83-85 monte carlo ss's came with 7.625 rear ends using 3.42 gears. The 86-88 used the same size housing and 3.73 gears.

442's, Hursts, and GN's all had the 8.5's and only 442's had the 3.73's. GN's and Hursts utilized the 3.42.

Incorrect. We really need a stickey with this info...

'83-'84 SS's had 7.5's with 3.42's and TH-350's.
'85-'87 SS's had 7.625's with 3.73's and 200-4R's.

'83 H/O's had 7.5's with 3.73's.
'84 H/O's had 8.5's with 3.73's.
'85-'87 442's had 8.5's with 3.73's. All had 200-4R's.

'84-'87 Turbo Buick's had 8.5's with 3.42's. All had 200-4R's.

Now somebody chisel that into a big stone or something...

Blake I agree our moderators should put that as a sticky. Its not a subject that needs to be discussed over and over with different opinions or developments or anything its simple facts that should be accessible. Its a disservice to our members by not making it a sticky.

well hm so many choices
so with the th-200 that i have
do you guys think i should go with

83-84 SS with 7.5 and 3.42 gears
or
84-87 Turbo Buick 8.5 rear with 3.42 gears

cause i dont want to go with 3.73's just due to the high RPMs
i dont want to push my v6 too much just enough to get a little balls out of it
and please dont reply with "drop a 350 in it"
cause that gets annoying i wanna be the odd ball that beefs up the 3.8l v6 boat(car)
may not be too odd ball to some but from what ive seen on here not many people are keeping there v6
so id like to see what i can make the ol' girl do
