Tried to time the 307 to spec and it does not like it at all! It idles way too fast and struggles to start. 20 degrees seems to be too far advanced. It does like 10 degrees....like the 305 and starts on a dime. Did Olds put "sleeper" 305's in 1983? Maybe a worn timing chain? Anyone have any thoughts? Help sure would be appreciated.

Are the marks on the balancer? If so, it's possible the outer ring on the balancer moved.

The stock harmonic balancer on my 307 broke in 1998 with only 40k miles on the car. I think that part is a weak link, and wouldn't be surprised if your marks are off.

Hmmmmmmm.......didn't occur to me. I usually miss the obvious! The timing marks are on the balancer. If it did move would it be loose? How did you fix the problem?

My balancer completely failed, if I remember correctly the balancer is made up of two parts, the center (which bolts to the crankshaft) and an outer metal ring with some type of plastic/rubber seal in between. That rubber failed in my case, and that outer ring part came completely off.

I had to replace the balancer.

I just realized that the code 9 307's only had the two-piece balancer, the code Y's had a one piece I believe. So this may not be your problem if you have the stock code Y balancer.

i always thought my 307 was off timing,i checked and it was on 20 degrees, just like the factory timing, mine might be running lean because i got to pump the sh*t out of it,even on a hot day.

Rebuild or replace the balancer.
I'm directing this to Joe since he is more knowledgable than I. Isn't there something you have to jump out in the diagnostic plug, to set the timing on a 307 w/ccc?

I know I'm not the Joe to which you were referring... but Yes you have to ground the test port.
