Could someone inform me as to how much HP a 200r4 can handle with it being stock?

There are several different versions of these trannys, depending on the vehicle they were installed in. The turbo Buicks usually got the strongest versions. Do you know what vehicle your transmission was originally installed in?

It was originally installed in a 87 MC SS

Hard to say really. It's really the torque that kills them anyway. IMO, a bone stock Monte SS trans wouldn't handle anything more than a mild 350 for any length of time. Add a shift kit and a transmission cooler and it should handle it pretty good. Anything more powerfull than that though and you'd be pushing it, but may last for a while.

Of course there are some who claim they have smoked a 2004r ( in various stock forms ) behind some pretty weak engines. There are also those who claim to have had great success with stock 2004r's behind some fairly potent engines, so take the info above for what it's worth.

Those transmissions dont seem to hold up too well, even with the basically stock 305. If you want to make it last longer, you could always install an external trans cooler.

A bone stock 200 4R with a performance valve body (OZ, BRF, KZF, CZF etc) should be able to handles a mild 350 build if it is not abused. The weak points are the input shaft and forward drum. Another key point is to keep the line pressure up so the clutches don't slip / glaze.

It's a commonly used transmission in G bodies and I don't see threads complaining about them failing so I don't know where you got that impresssion

I just got the impression from the three people I know who have G bodies and the transmissions never lasted, including mine. I've just never seen one that lasted long thats all, I could easily be wrong, almost everyone probably knows more than I do, I just started getting into cars when I got mine a year and a half ago.

Mine has no trouble behind my 140hp 305. I predict a long, trouble-free life.

In stock form (no matter what the application) the most common failure is the splines on the stator support. That the part on the front of the pump that the torque converter slips over. An updated hardened replacement is about $35 and takes about 30 minutes to replace if the transmission is already out.

The rest of the transmission is stout enough from a mechanical standpoint. DoubleV is right, the torque kills them, not HP. Anything you can do to increase line pressure and firm up shifts will increase the lifespan. That holds true for ANY automatic transmission.
