I took my Cutlass on the freeway and its running 3 grand doing 70 and 2,500 doing 65 mph. I had the lockup on, my combo is 2004r with 3:42 gears. It seemed high to me what do you think?

Either your trans is slipping or its not engaging in OD... theres no WAY it should that high...

with my 3.08s a 27inch tire and OD not locking up im at 2200 at 70... what are you running wheel barrow tires?? lil tires would do that too

Its either that or you have the wrong gearset.. whats your RPMS in D at that speed?

Or your tach is off or the speedometer.

My Cutlass with 3.73's, no lockup and 26" tall tires would cruise around 2200rpm @ 65mph. With lockup it would be closer to 2000.

With a 3.42 gear set it would be closer to 1900rpm @ 65mph with the 26" tire.

I know the speedo is correct I checked it with my gps. I think the tach maybe off cuz it lugs at 65 but the tach still reads 2,500. When I turn on the lock up it only drops between 200 and 300 rpms. I will bring home my multimeter from work it has a tach reading feature on it.

Are you using a rally gauge tach? or aftermarket, which have settings for 4,6,8 cylinders and if its set to 6cyl...it will read higher than normal. Just fyi...

If your tach is reading correct and it's lugging like you said, I would check your torque converter, sounds like it may be slipping?

I wonder if my stall convertor has anything to do with it. I was told it has a 3,000 stall. After 3 grand it really kicks you back in the seat.

Converters dont slip in lockup...hence the term

Even then I doubt it's slipping that much. My brother's 3000 stall converter is hardly any different than the 2200 stall it used to have.

I have a 700r4, 0.70:1 overdrive, 3.42 gears, 25.6 inch tall tires, with a 3000rpm stall 11inch converter
at 60mph, I cruise at 2000rpm, 1800rpm in lockup... the stall drop is only 200rpm at most

at cruising speeds or light throttle use, a stall convert should not feel much worse than a normal one. My 3000rpm slips only a few 100rpms under light throttle. The only time it will stall to it's specified speed is under heavy to full throttle.

... if you are seeing more slip than this at part throttle, you may have some other issues to investigate
