Been driving the '87 442 fine this summer, more than usual. Went to drive the other day, slight whining noise when idling. Trans would not shift past 2nd. tried manual shifting still nothing. Noise was louder in second and would get louder with RPM. Checked TV cable moved okay and adjusted by pushing all the way in and stepping on throttle listening for snaps. Still won't shift out of 2nd. Please help not much driving season left. Possible sticking governor? Thanks in advance.

Check the oil level. Does it smell burnt? Sounds like you have a burnt 3-4 clutch pak. Common issue in 700R4 and 2004R's if TV cable is set wrong or gets out of adjustment. If you still have a solid 1st, 2nd, and reverse and shifts good 1-2 then odds are good 3-4 clutch pak shot.

Fluid not burnt smelling. Trans only has 15,000 miles and shifted fine until the other day....

Was this trans rebuilt 15k miles ago? If so, that may be your problem. Unless it was rebuilt by one of the few guys who actually rebuild these trannys properly, then there's a good chance it simply wasn't rebuilt right.

The car is original, not raced or abused and only has 15,000 miles. No leaks and level is good and not burnt. Sorry for leaving that out in the first post. I just think if it was failing it would have been slipping or shifting wrong, not drive okay one day and only go to second gear the the next. It doesn't even try to go into third, stays in second and I can hear a whining noise as rpm changes the whine changes. Thanks

I'd drop the pan to see if there is any accumulated debris from the clutch packs. Did you check the TV cable adjustment before you drove the car?

Re adjusted TV cable now shifts fine. Drove to work today. Fluid nice red color. Thanks for the help.

you're a lucky man, it doesn't take long to fry the transmission if the TV cable isn't adjusted properly
