what are the best stock haeds for a 3.8?? do the newer series engine's heads fit on the older block's?? I want a pair of aluminum head's, i'll keep my finger's crossed. and if anyone know's is it possible to hook up a 5-speed out of some front-wheel drive car, or maybe a 4-speed out of a fiero and the AWD out of a 6000??

No on all accounts. If you want AWD, you'll have to get the rare ( less than 1,000 made over 20 years ago) Pontiac 6000 STE with it and work from there. Maybe the turbo variant of the 60 degree V6 out of the rarer ( maybe 300 made) turbo grand prix of the late 80's swapped in. All that for a car with a crappy chassis and a not so good engine. If you want a powerful AWD sedan and don't mind shopping for a while, look for a early 90's Mitsubishi Galant VR4. Forerunner to the EVO as the Mitsu Rally car of choice, it's basically a DSM drivetrain in a Galant Shell. It's basically a bigger version of the EVO II or EVO III which were made off the Mirage ( called the Lancer in Japan) chassis. It'll be cheaper and easier than any of this stuff swapped together into a G body. Plus, the 4G63 takes boost better than the 60 degree GM V6. The only remotely possible "easy" AWD swap into a G body involves modifying the AWD system out of the Astro/Safari vans like GM did when it built the Typhoon/Cyclone super trucks in the early 90's. How? You're on your own there. I considered doing it but rejected it for several technical reasons involving weight distribution, etc. I did figure out some of the technical details of it however, if you are interested.

For a manual trans G body, why use FWD crap? Use the trans out of an F body! As for heads, there was a hybrid 3.8 used in the rare 1989 Trans Am Pace Car replica that involves the 3800 heads on a 3.8 block due to space constraints in the F body chassis, but I am unsure if they were special heads or a special block designed to mate the parts together, or if it's a bolt in. If you really want a 3800 that bad though, use the 3800 Series II V6 out of a 4th Gen F body from the later 90's. It has a RWD T-5 5spd trans and then you have to figure out a clutch linkage. This answers some of the questions you asked. However, the actual post shows somewhat of a lack of knowledge of the basics and I would suggest studying up on them first before trying to build a b*st*rd hybrid. Also, post these things in the right sub forum next time.

sorry

well it's not for a g-body, but it seems people here actually know how to mod this motor. it's for a 85 Oldsmobile Cialis. not much fun converting it to RWD, but awd would be easier. im not worried about difficulty, or time it'll take to build. seem's the only AWD i can get from a junkyard for gm's is a 6000 awd, and i've actaully seen one in a junkyard around my place, but i dont want the auto, but it only came with the auto, i was hoping maybe the t-case(or however fwd configured awd work)would adapt to 4 or 5 speed manual. as for turbo's and money, i have and can get turbo's and related item's cheap, just gotta be patient, 3.8's are cheap and easy to get.

as for awd in a g-body, a safari awd transmission would work, but the front suspension is the real problem, but if you dont mind hacking up a couple of cars i believe it is possible. use an s-10 4wd front end, and modify your oil pan to sit as low as possible over the diff.

The thing is, you won't be able to use the AWD transfer case with any transmission other than the one off the Pontiac 6000 with AWD. My experience with this sort of transverse engine AWD system is with a 1G DSM, and the trans is specifically designed to take the AWD T case. As there is no AWD manual trans designed to take this transfer case, it is impossible to mate the the two without significant fabrication. It likely would be easier to have a adapter plate fabricated to mate a transmission/ transfer case off a 2g DSM to the V6 of your choice than make the GM trans work the way you wish. Why a 2G and not a 1G? The 1G DSM's are reverse rotation and have the transmission on the opposite side of the engine bay of your Calais. 2G's switched to standard rotation like the EVO8. The only other AWD transverse engine applications I can think of that were sold in the US are the 1987-1990 B12 chassis Sentra AWD wagon, EF Civic wagon, Ford Taurus MT+S, Audi TT Quattro, VW Passat 4 Motion, VW Golf R32, Mitsubishi Evolution 8,9 and 10, Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 and Subaru Justy.

thank you

i might just do that, it would at least give me AWD and i know it can take some power, never thought of it tough, thank you!

For the money you will spend to adapt an AWD system, and the amount of time, effort and fabrication, you would be better off just buying an AWD car to begin with if it is really what you want. I'd look at a mid 90's Subaru Imprezza RS 2.5 as probably the best non turbo AWD car out there. Small, relatively light, it's basically a WRX without the EJ20T engine. You can get the WRX engine and do a complicated ( wiring) swap to make it fast. As complicated as rewiring a Subaru may be, it is still easier than making a car AWD that didn't start life that way. Even the more pedestrian Imprezzas had AWD optional, as did the Legacy. Either way, this would be a cheaper option than trying to convert an N body to AWD. If You don't like the Subie, look for an older Audi Quattro, they're cheap enough if you get a beater. Audi started building them in the mid 80's to homologate the system for group N rally competition, so there should be some still around in less than pristine shape.
