I am having a random problem with my 87 Cutlass, up to 94k original miles now.

The car, after coming to a stop usually, will suddenly go full throttle just by tapping the gas pedal.

It is very random, and unpredictable.

It is a completely stock v6 with all original equipment still installed (AC, emissions, etc).

It was meticulously maintained, the original owner went so far as to record every time he filled up, gallons, date, price.

I checked the linkage and cleaned/ lubricated all moving components, linkage is fine.

The brakes (all new) can not stop the car once it surges, and I have to go quickly to neutral, turn key off, restart (usually while in heavy traffic in Providence) and it is fine again.

Is there a solenoid I should look at? Any help is greatly appreciated!

It could be a short in the AC Idle control solenoid in front of the throttle linkage. It's the only thing that I can think of off hand that would bring up the idle like that. Disconnecting it will set off a Check Engine light. Look for breaks in the wire leading to it. If none are seen then you will have to live with a CE light until it's fixed.

I will try that in the morning. Not worried about the check engine light, just trying not to get killed!
Thank you for your help!

Hey Jetset im sort of dealing with the same thing as him, except on my 84 Supreme Brougham 3.8, all stock like him, i noticed that my car also accelerates by itself seeing as though i was on ice last night and the tires started spinning by themselves, linkage is free, You think if i clean the IAC that'll help?

That solenoid is usually cover by a boot. Contamination would stop it from moving not make it move on it's own.
