If you have a good running 305 in your car, and you are not looking for a street screamer, there are plenty of things you can do to get it up in the 275-300 horse range without sacrificing reliability. Vortec heads are a great upgrade. If you want the bone stock look, World makes an S/R Torquer 305 head that is worth about 30 horse over stock heads. The stock aluminum intake is a pretty decent piece for a factory intake. An Edelbrock Performer or equivalent is a good upgrade though. A performer RPM is too big . Cam selection for a 305 is tricky, due to the bore and head port size. I called Comp Cams years ago and had help with my selection, but the specs have slipped my mind and I can't find the card. I had a 305 HO with the cam, intake, and slight port and valve work on the stock heads. Also had headers and full dual exhaust. it was fun, and quite a lot better than my stock LG4 305. Even got around 20-22 mpg! But it was no 383, so it now sits in the corner of the shop until i find another gbody to throw it in.
