(edit: If this should be in the engine section please move it)
I have spent several hours looking for an answer. Here is my question: If you had a vin 9 motor and a vin Y motor sitting side by side, how do you know which one is which? Assume both are fully assembled from carb to oil pan and you cannot take them apart. I am used to chevy engines and running block casting numbers to derermine what the engine is, but Olds seems to be a little different. There is a casting number on top of the front cover next to the oil fill tube (3161 GM 5.0L G) and all I can come up with is "code 5A 1981-? 307"... The motor also has 5A heads and an A4 intake. I am hoping to determine if it is a 9 or a Y and what year it is from. Eventually I will disassemble and rebuild the motor, but I don't want to scatter the parts and then loose some or have them be in the way.
Thanks in advance for any help.
