Is it necessary to modify the a/c bracket to mount to olds 455? The reason why I ask is , I seen one guys 455 mounted with a/c bracket of the 307 and it wasn't even modified but he did have edelbrock heads. do not know if that will make a difference

No mods It fits.

I only run SB Olds but some guys who have extended the bracket to keep the A/C. Just like there is different mounting on the non A/C alternator bracket due to the deck height. I'm sure it had to be modified to work.

You sure about that? Every person I've heard says the AC bracket(s?) needs to be modded. My friend has an 83 Hurst Olds with a 455 and he didn't mod his AC bracket. Just bolted it right onto the 455. Result? The AC compressor doesn't line up with the pullys like they should. He is currently just running it without the AC belt until he gets around to addressing this.

I did it with a stock '83 98 Regency with the 307. The 455 came from a 76 '98 Regency. The 455 AC bracket used the long compressor. I used all the brackets from the 307. The only one I had to mod was the Alternator bracket. I had to elongate 2 bolt holes. Some of the early Alt brackets had BBO and SBO bolt holes. The metal AC bracket for the short compressor has those holes. If your friends belts didn't line up, it's not the bracket. Olds brackets don't shift front to back, they shift side to side. That may be a pulley issue. I recently found out that the welded water pump pulley separates with time. It happened to me with a pulley that came with my car's original 307. Even though I knew better, i kept thinking it was that the belt was old. The AC and P/S was out of line. Check out the end of my post "307 out and 350 in. What went wrong?" there are pics of those pulleys. Took me a sec to find the separation, because it doesn't look like anything is wrong at first glance.
I personally never herd of anyone having a issue with the AC bracket without it being something else.

Does it move to a different pulley half way in between?

See the photo below of a stock 307 AC bracket for short compressors, where are those holes?

If you had to modify a STOCK 307 Alternator bracket to fit on a 455 then you did something wrong.
For a STOCK 307 ALT bracket to work about 1.3" of spacers is needed between the PS and Alt bracket where they bolt together.

Anyone that says a STOCK 307 AC bracket fits on a 455 is spreading misinformation, the top two tabs need to be extended roughly 1.3" in a Z formation.
See below where these tabs need to go:

Ok guys I made a few calls to find the owner of the two 98 Regencys. And I officially stand corrected.
He was there during this 455 swap and he said that I made a cut to the front bracket to make it fit. I just don't remember it. Now this swap was in 1995, so the only thing I recall is that all was easy. Except getting the computer to run the 455 and that eventually worked too.
I read that article and the only thing that resembles what I did was the alternator mounting. I did use the 307 AC brackets and I was told I made the cut to the front bracket only. Now at that time I didn't own a welder so it was bolted in some way. The thing is, a year later I did a cam and timing chain swap on that car. So the mod I did had to be simple. It will probably pop into my head weeks from now while doing some thing non-related.
Sorry for the Left turn guys, I forget more than I remember these days. 😳

Oh, and the brackets I mentioned that fit both big and small block were made in the 70's. My apologies for not specifying that.
