I have gotten an opportunity to get a free 307 small block. i want some suggestions on how to build it up. is it possible to get over 400 horse??

i'm still looking around for cominations. but i know i dont have the funds for a crate motor.

this is going into a 83 cutlass supreme. ideally i want it to be a street/show car project.

307 chevy?
Is so they are not the boat anchors alot of people think they are.
Decent stroke but a small bore. got to make them rev though.
I had one in my 68 camaro that I took out of a 71 gmc.
Stock bottom end and heads. A bit of a wild cam, intake and a 750 dp holly would rev 7000 all day long and turned 13.9 in the quarter with a 4 speed.
Drive it anywhere too. I had more fun with that motor in the camaro than I did with the 500 hp 406 that replaced it.
10 years later that motor still lives with the stock bottom end in my friends malibu.

pretty sure chevy doesnt have a 307.. chevy= 305 , olds=307 either way 400 horses is not only a waste of time and money but would take way too much custom work to get it to work. more realistically is like 200-250 horse but maybe 300-350 tq but that would take more money and effort than it is worth

Chevy's have 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400, 427, 454. But I am probably missing alot. One way to get an easy 10-50 HP, is to get a spacer that goes between the carb and intake. And the ignition setup, get MSD wires and the MSD cap. Hope to help out,

Thanks.

I argued with a parts guy at a GM dealership about that once.
I finally went behind the counter myself and grabbed one of the books, looked up 1970 chevelle and showed him the engine options for the year.
I have also owned 3 of them.

Chevy made a 307 small block from about 68 to 73.

Chevy made a handful of 307s for a few years.... 68-74? i think...they werent anything special tho... 200hp was all you got out of them..

Yeah they made a few. But they are the best small ci motors Chevy made. I have a 69' 307 Sbc with the matching number 1.76 Powerglide that came with it. And it was the best small motor I've ever seen. Let it set for 1 week, go out there pump the gas twice starts right up and idle's by itself.

I'd get it and upgrade the ignition, rockers ( the ones that are not stamped ad 15HP ), pushrods, cam and lifter set ( Summit sales for cheap ), and just this and that small things will improve the power.

It will run OK, but it is not really a good engine to sink a lot of money into. They were the 305's of their time, good to get you from A to B faster than a 250 L6 would, just don't expect to get there in a hurry. It is a better engine for performance use than a 305, only slightly though. It has a bigger bore and a shorter stroke as it is in essence a reverse 302. If you remember, the Chevy 302 was a 327 block's 4 inch bore with a 283 crank's 3 inch stoke, well the 307 has the 327's 3.25 in stroke crank with the 283's 3.875 in bore. By comparison, a 305 has a 350 crank's 3.48 in stroke, and loses it's 45 ci by using a much smaller bore diameter of 3.736in as opposed to the 350's bore of 4 in..

Unless I missed something, we STILL haven't heard from the author of the original post as to whether he's talking about a 307 Chevy or a 307 Olds.

It kinda matters.

u know what, i'm not sue if its from a olds or a chevy..i think chevy. but after consulting with a friend I'm going to go 350 and up. chevy small block.
