Hi
I have a 1987 442 with a stock 307,I just found a 1972 olds 350 for sale , the 350 has a aftermarket cam and intake on it.( I have no idea what make the cam and intake is )
Is it worth the money to swap out the 307 for the 350 ?
Should I expect any difference in performance since both engines is rated at around 180 hp stock ?

I am planning on getting new headers ,exhaust and a carb if i buy the 1972 350.

Without a doubt the 350 will have more power plus it has a lot more potential for upgrades so buy what you need and throw it in there and pretty much everything will carry over from the 307.

You will need to use the 307 motor mounts and an air cleaner that will allow the hood to shut. Everything else should fall into place.

If it has an oil fill tube like your 307, it is a 350. And YES there will be a big leap in performance. Plus, if it is indeed a 1972, there is a change it could have a nodular iron crank. Solid candidate for future upgrades. Way moreso than the 307.

An Olds 350 can use the regular taller mounts, mine I used 78 B body 403 mounts. I used the 2" taller RPM manifold with a drop base and a 3" filter would just clear. The dual snorkel air cleaner will clear with the lower 307 mounts.

I will probably get the 350 then 🙂
Which carburetor would fit this engine ,the owner of the engine had a holley street avenger 670 on it ,but i think it might be to big ?

That carb is fine for that engine. A better fit would be a rebuilt Quadrajet for an olds from 1976-1979 with electric choke, but that Holley is fine if you just want to cruise.

"Worth the money?"... That question would imply that we knew how much money, correct?

It's a bit disingenuous to recommend a carb without knowing what cam was installedOther members are more knowledgeable, but I'd think a new top end kit (cam/heads/intake) would be in order. That way, you know exactly what was done and what parts you have.

The asking price for the engine is about 400 dollars ,the engine was last used two years ago in a 1987 442.
I say go for it. Oldsmobile stuff comes at a high price these days and for what he's asking for it is in chevy territory price wise. Nab it while you can. Before you put it in, give it a once over. Pull the heads and intake. Inspect everything. DO NOT pull the lifters unless you plan on a new cam because you will lose the damn things and if you get em mixed up, you're gonna have a bad time. Pull the oil pain and clean out the pickup tube. Inspect the rods. If there are numbers on the caps, it's been apart before. Check the tops of the pistons for numbers like .030 or .040 or measure the bore to see if it's been overbored. Then regasket the whole thing, you'll need to anyway if it's been sitting for two years. If it's had coolant or oil in it for that long all the gaskets and maybe water pump are garbage.
