Hey I'm finally swapping out my 260 from my cutty and right now I'm really stuck on what engine should I use because the 307ci v8 was the biggest for the 81 Cutlass Calais and I want to keep it mostly stock but a friend of mine has a 403 and is willing to just trade me for the 260 but I don't know which is better because I want good gas mileage still and ok power since i still gotta cruise

If your friend is stupid enough to want to trade a 403 for a slug 260, then do it. You can laugh at him later. The 403 in some cases could actually give you better milage because you can accelerate your car with less throttle. A 260 and 403 are externally identical so you can install a 403 ( or Olds 307 or Olds 350 ) and everything will bolt right up. A 260 make NO power at all. It's pathetic. The 403 will smoke it and do so with comparable gas milage.

403

the 260 he wants it for a modified golf cart thing. so what are the specs for the 403 hp, tq, mpg and all that stuff

Stock I think they were 185 HP and 330 ft lbs of torque. That's with crappy exhaust, a very restrictive pellet style converter, and a stock 'emissions tune'. MPG is going to depend on too many factors to say. Tune it up good, install a nice exhaust system and you'll get a nice power increase along with better milage than stock. If you're overly concerned about milage, get a 2004r transmission. Better yet, get one anyway and install some steeper gears. That'll give you alot more oomph and not effect your milage ( will probably improve it in traffic ) vs haveing no OD and shitty gearing.

Thanks and the exhaust is already in the car I got a custom made one from a local shop using 2.5" pipes with thrush glasspacks, I also have a spectre dual cold air intake, oil breathers so this beast will breath right and hopefully I get the engine soon outa the machine shop to start the build. I heard 403 heads suck is that true? I'm running 3.08 gears in the back are they good and was wondering if I can still keep the th350 transmission the car has

I am wondering who has a 403 olds in good condition because the 403 I got sucked it has 2 cracked cylinders and a small crack on the bottom of the block which is what I was told from the shop where it was gona get machined

So, your saying that your buddy (one hell of a buddy) traded you your 260 for a POS 403 and you didn't get your original motor back and tell him to use the 403 for a boat anchor? WOW, wanna buy some beach front property in Arizona?
