The TH400 is probably gonna eat up an extra 20-30HP because of it's heavier internals...myself i'd stick with the TH350

The 400 will handle anything you put at it if you build it. A built 350 will only handle up to about 700hp. I have a 400 behind my 512 bbc.

i have a 400 hp 327 in my 84 regal with a turbo 400 transmission , had to get a custom driveshaft but it was worth it

I agree with the 455/th400 combo if you are building the car for the strip.
Dont forget your expenses and work don't stop with the engine and transmission if you are going to use the car on the street.
A larger radiator will be required for street use as will upgraded suspension and possibly brakes too.
Will the rear end be capable of dealing with BB torque?.
All your cars weaknesses will be exposed over a season of racing, forewarned is forearmed.
I'm not trying to be a wet blanket, but make sure you are aware of all the work and money needed to have you smiling on the journey home from the strip with a bunch of win slips.

I agree with the 327 for $500 is a bit on the pricey side for one that "needs some love". I have a 327 residing in my engine bay hooked to a 700r4, and have 3:73's waiting to go in, but if you're looking to race it, you'd probably be able to find a decent running BB for around the same price. don't close off your options, and please- never mention the thought of dropping a ford motor into your buick ever again!
