How hard is it to replace the extension housing on the back of a gm 350 transmission? Was wondering if it just requires taking off the 4 bolts to replace it.

Re: 350 transmission extension housing removal?

It's straight forward. Disconnect driveshaft, unscrew speedo cable. Either drain trans fluid or jack up the rear of the car. Then unbolt tailshaft housing,
That's about it in a nutshell.

Re: 350 transmission problem! Opinions on transmission 700r4 conversion

That's what I thought. The fluids are already drained since the back half of the tailshaft housing blew apart from the vibration caused by the driveshaft. All this happened cause I didn't check the u-joint to see if it had the needle bearings. One cap did, the other didn't.

What I'm going to do is pull the engine and transmission out. While I'm going to do minor maintenance to the engine, and touch up and repaint alot of parts, what would you suggest for the transmission? Would it be worth while to use a 700r4 or 2004r (If I can find one), how hard of a conversion is it, and how much does this type of swap cost? I know the caprices had the 700r4, will it work if I use the same brackets, tv cables, etc. Also heard that I have to use a different crossmember. Can I know just re-drill holes and move my factory one back to compensate or could the caprice crossmember fit in an 80 malibu?

Or should I just have the 350 checked and rebuilt if the damage isn't too bad. Right now I'm using a 1900-2000 stall.

I could be wrong, but I think it's the 700R4 that's a good transmission for a truck. The 1st-2nd shift are bad, I think.
