Hi everyone, I have a couple of questions to ask about these two engines. In a few weeks i will be ordering one of these engines from jegs. I have narrowed it down to the $1959.99 gm performance parts 350 at 290hp/326tq. The other option is the $2595.99 blueprint budget stomper 383 with 330 hp/385tq. I already have an edelbrock performer intake, holly 600cfm carb, and all accessories such as waterpump, starter, etc. All I need is the engine and some nice fitting headers. Can anyone give me the pros and cons of these two engines. Im not building a drag car, just a daily driver that can hold its own against a few hondas and mazdas  The car It will be going in is my 85 cutlass supreme with a completely dead sbc 350 in it and a turbo350 transmission. Stock everything else except flowmaster exhaust. Its pictured below.

Well just off the bat, the GM Performance 350 is not gonna help you hold up with the few hondas and mazdas.

I believe the 383 is a 350 with a longer stroke. Benefit is torque, which is what you need on the street. I drove a 1981 Grand Prix once with the 383 in it and man did it move. Off the line, you would kill all the hondas and mazdas on the street. It's also a reliable street engine. You won't be revving high RPM on the strip, so I would not worry.

These engines are new with warrantee right? So I would go 383.

P.S. Love the sig. Proverbs rock lol.

Thanks man. I was leaning towards the 383 but I just didnt know how much quality Blueprint put into their engines. Hopefully they stand by their 30 month 50,000 mile warranty.

 good info, I guess I'll keep looking around. I really want a 383 but i dont have $3500-$4500 to spare. Oh well, back to square 1 😢

My comment may not hold much water but its a comment. If you have the money i would say go with a 383 of some kind (not Blueprint) but some kind. I have heard stories of 383 being crazy fast. I had a friend whose cutlass had a 383 he built in it, and it was the fastest around. It got stolen, then the guys were racing his car around town, then they set it on fire at some point in time. But i guess the motor was still good and he kept the motor. At one point he saw them in his car and he tried to catch him but his own car was too fast.
Then another guy i saw on craigslist claimed that he had a 383 bought from Summit Racing and in a cutlass and it was faster than the poilice, thats kinda fast !

I think once that stroke gets going there is no stopping it !

I tossed this dilemma back and forth for 2 years before a motor fell in my lap and changed my mind. Either way for the money spent you need to ditch the stock heads that come on the 290hp engine.

Just in case you are not aware. If you get the base 290hp 350 from GM it is a brand new with 4 bolt mains engine, not a reman. From there you are only a Vortec head swap and cam change away from the 330hp/ 380 ft/lbs mark which is their 350HO motor.

According to my GMPP catalogue the 350HO uses the exact same bottom end as the 290 ho engine with stock Vortec heads, stock stamped rockers, and a .435/.460 lift cam on a 212deg/222deg duration. If you upgrade to the Hot Cam Swap with their Roller tip 1.5 rockers you will hit the magic 350 hp mark without having to re-work the heads.

So with a stock 350 bottom end and stock Vortec Heads 350hp / 380 ft/lbs torque is about max. This is where the stock vortec heads top out and the machinework and aftermarket springs / heads come in to make more power beyond that point.

The 383 won't give you much more HP than the 350 ( with the same stock vortec heads ) but it will have more torque.

So comparing apples to apples the bone stock 383 bottom end ( same 9.1 cr as above ) and a smaller camshaft than above, and stock iron Vortec heads that motor ( HT 383 ) makes 340 hp and 435 ft/lbs of torque.

Pick your poison. For $2k I would make some freinds at the local machine shop and build a 383. I know my freinds MonteSS with the 383 pulls like a ****.

As well I don't know where you are located but there is a guy on maluracing selling his 383 top to bottom for $2500.00. He's in Jersey

Indeed, this comment does hold water! The 81GP that I drove -- the guy wanted $12000 for it. Yikes! Needless to say I didn't buy it. He touted it as being "faster than a viper" which was questionable, but I understand why he would say such a thing, especially when I drove it. There is something about having so much torque in a smallblock (low weight) engine. You touch the gas and it basically snaps your neck back, it's a toy unlike none other.

debub gave a couple of good suggestions in your other 383 thread..... looks like your best option is to save up your money and/or wait a while (there really is no "budget" build unless you want headaches man).

I've been through all this shyt anyways. Having an engine built only to have problems with it and no one to take responsibility, in the end the only loser is you, and at your cost. Years and years later, I would put nothing else in my car unless it was a crate engine, carb to pan, in my most recent case, EFI to pan (Pat Musi/Edelbrock 555 big block crate).

Just called my local machine shop. The guy told me that they can build me an older model 350 longblock for $895. I didn't ask about the horsepower but it comes with an 8month warranty. They also told me they could build me a 383 for $2500 with no warranty, although he guaranteed it would crank up and run :? What do yall suggest. Like I said I forgot to ask about the horsepower and torque for both :blam: but which sounds like the better deal?
