there are a few things to consider how far into each motor do you want to go? if you plan on going through which ever motor you get completely you could put in a little longer stroke crank in the 400 and a 5.7 rod and still not have the money in the 400 that you would in the olds motor and then get a little more torque from that upgrade alone plus when it comes to availablility for parts chevy has it all the way now i have been behind some dang good built olds motors dont get me wrong still have one right now but it is easier to do the chevy no matter how you look at it in the end.

It seems completely backwards and counter intuitive to convert an LS based engine back to a carb. Why in the WORLD would you want to do that???

My thoughts exactly.

It's similar when someone takes an engine that's never had fuel injection on it, plan to inject it & a hoard of folks say "why didn't you just install a blah, blah, blah".

The carb conversion is the same, with some people, it's to be different. Others, it's looks. Others still it's the comfort factor, i.e. those who don't like all those wires / connections, tuning, (supposed) expense...

Personally, I'll take an LS-series either way. But in terms of the transmission isn't there a spacer needed for the flexplate when bolting an Ls to an earlier automatic? Isn't the the rear flange inward more than on a gen I/II?

Sorry for the thread jack Vet.
