403 olds questions

Whoa there you two. I just made a comment that was searching for information, not telling him what to do. I am genuinely curious why he picked Olds over Chevy. I didn't mean to start a fight or an argument.

Guys, don't fight over my sickness, the 403 is only a preference, trust me I have plenty of chevy stuff, and I have not built any smoke ring blowers. If I had a yard sale on engine parts alone I could probably afford to paint my salon. The Oldsmobile vs Chevy, my dealings, I like the both of them, but we really don't need to go there. I like to wrench on my G-body, its like an ongoing saga, the G-boby is to me an excellent platform for a race car, two door, full frame, rear wheel drive, I've owned ten different G-bodys, and I have two shop right now. I love building engines, and these cars keep me home and out of trouble, and my wife likes to drive them from time to time.

there is no steam holes to drill on the 350 heads for the 403, all you need to do is open the head bolt holes and open the dowel pin holes up to 5/16s...

as for gears or anything else like ppl mentioned.. you really dont need 3.73s or 4.11s, i ran 3.73s and it was fun on the street but sucked balls on the freeway... even tho the 403 rocks a super huge bore and short stroke.. youd think it make keen top end power.. not this time.. the motor will rev.. but at the same time makes a sh*t load amount of low end torque thanks to its head and intake design.. dont let ppl fool ya.. this motor with a good cam and early heads will run like a chevy or even better.. and for not that much coin.. ask me how i know 😉

If it's mostly for Street go with 3.42, or more Racing 4.11 gears.

I think I'm gonna leave the 373 in for now, I've lost some of the little brace's that go from the a\c compressor to the intake and I think it had one from the alt going down to the exhaust. If anyone has some of these laying around, pm me or post a reply.I just got my headers yesterday, flowtec, ceramic coated, man they look nice, I have a msd 6 box for it, but still need msd dist., to complete that set up, guess my hei will do for now. The wiki. says the 403 with 7a, or any early model 350 head should be around 9.5:1, also says 64cc combustion chamber, for the 7a, does that info sound correct.

It depends on:
whether the head chamber truly is 64cc, which is what's listed for the 7A head, but listed vs actual isn't always the same
the piston, i.e. flat-top, dished
if the heads where milled, which you stated yours aren't
the gasket thickness (compressed)

Also as stated you did enlarge the bolt holes in the head right?

the "7A" supposed to be 69cc
the "4A" supposed to be 83cc

But like jae said listed ain't always true. When i had my '66 BBO "B" heads cc'd before Street/Strip ported to flow 278cfm in/ 227ex (from 243in/172ex) they are supposed to be 80cc, in reality were actually 82cc.

Well I guess I could follow up on the outcome of all my questions and wrenching, after changing the frame mounts, three different starters, and putting the 2004r turbo back in, the 403 developed a major oil leak from somewhere on the back of the engine. Could have been oilpan, rear main, cam plug, valve cover, I don't know but if any of yall have ever got angry at your creation and wanted to invest in t-n-t well thats where I was. So now for all the guys who wondered why I favored the olds over chevy, the salon has and has had a sbc 350, .060 overbored, 230 dur, 480 lift hyd. roller cam, vortec heads, blackjack long tube headers, and a victor jr. intake with holley 700 double pumper. But, yes I still have the 403, its sitting over to the side out of the way for now, every now and then I think about taking it apart to see what the problem was, and then I go outside and take my cutlass for a drive. I haven't ran it on the strip yet but hopefully that'll come this spring. The sbc runs very strong and I think the transmission is losing 2nd gear, but my brother runs a shop local and he built me a 700r4, so thats gonna be the next upgrade when the little 200 finally gives up.
